The only tricky point to remember about consonant base verbs concerns the last three bases in the list in section 7.2.
- “ㄹ -ㄷ Verbs.”
Verbs which end in -ㄹ change the -ㄹ to ㄷ before endings which begin with a consonant.
들- | listen to | > | 듣다 | to listen to (Dictionary form) |
- “w -ㅂ Verbs.”
Verbs which end in -w change the -w to ㅂ before endings which begin with a onsonant:
더 w- | be hot | > | 덥다 | to be hot (Dictionary form) |
The “ㅇ” or Zero consonant sign which gets written before any syllable beginning with a vowel does not count as a’consonant’ for the purposes of our rules.
- “S-irregular Verbs. “Verbs which end in (-ㅅ) drop the -ㅅ before endings which begin with a vowel:
나(ㅅ)- | be better | > | 낫다 | to be better (Dictionary form) |
> | 나아 | is better (Infinitive form) |
These are different from regular verbs in -ㅅ, which keep the ㅅ in all forms:
벗- | take off (clothes) | > | 벗어 | takes off (clothes) (Infinitive form) |
> | 벗다 | to take off (clothes) (Dictionary form) |
